Good morning!
Normal morning around here checking on the sheep..except...one of the new lambs is a bit adventurous..this should help with naming...personalities oh wait...lambonalities! He just wanted a better view.. The ewes diet right now!
Grains, and a flake of alfalfa Plus a bale of mixed grass hay in field! Lots of protein for lactating ewes to promote levels of milk production for those sweet lambs! Did you know? That an ewe should be feed at least about 1 pound of grain for each lamb nursing on her! Adding to the flock again!
Added yesterday: a new ram, and another ewe with two lambs..both females.. So decided on names for the two boys with the help of my favorite little people! Pongo and Fred!
Meet Pongo the smallest lamb I think winter is defiantly trying to show up today.
Snow flurries and cold.. Good day to deliver bales With the storms coming through today and all the rain we are supposed to get today!
This morning was spent putting up the sheep! I normally leave them out, during the weather, and not lock them up! But today, with the creek filling up fast and strong currents, I decided to put them up! Of course they were happy to get extra feed today! oday is national milk day!
Today marks the day that milk started being delivered, and not in a gallon jug but in a glass bottle! The first glass bottle for milk was created in 1884 by Dr.Thatcher. According to the... “National Dairy Council, milk has 9 essential nutrients that benefit our body” Those 9 essential nutrients are: CALCIUM PROTEIN POTASSIUM PHOSPHORUS VITAMIN D VITAMIN B12 VITAMIN A B2 NIACIN Here’s some thing to think about... How many times a day we use milk? My minds on breakfast so here’s some examples: Just a nice glass of milk With cereal in the morning To make scrambled eggs Milk has multi purpose uses whether it be: Butter, Yogurt, Ice Cream etc.. It doesn’t even have to be food, some lotions and beauty products have milk as an ingredient! Milk is important, I mean if you think about it... a lot is made with milk...products we use daily, besides just drinking it! Mammals to, including women are able to produce milk to feed their young/child! Just like cows are able to produce for our consumption and their calf’s! Especially passing down nutrition! You see when your are born and just like when a calf is born that first drink/meal from your mother is important it’s known as the “liquid gold” better known as colostrum which boost the immune system! Another animal that we use milk a lot from is goat. There are many other animals that produce milk that we consume but MAJORITY of our dairy products come from cows! SO TODAYS CHALLENGE FOR YOU! WHAT DO YOU CONSUME THE MOST OF THAT HAS MILK IN IT? Or HOW MANY GLASSES OF MILK DO YOU DRINK A DAY? Yes this includes chocolate milk folks Or WHAT TYPE OF MILK DO YOU BUY? 2%,whole,skim, 1% etc **my answers will be in comments later today stay tuned** ALSO Thank that local dairy, thank the transportation from farm to store and of course be thankful those cows and other female mammals that produce milk. xx A Growers Granddaughter Have a great Saturday! Did you know...
that genetically modified soybeans were introduced to the commercial market in 1996? The first GM soybeans introduced by Monsanto! Everyday you scroll on facebook or walk down a grocery store isle and look at a product, or even watch television and a commercial plays and you see something that has to deal with GMO's.
Mostly negative/anti and some positive/pro. I always get so worked up with the word GMO and no its not because I dislike them, because I am all for GMO's , ALL FOR! The reason I get worked up is because so many people assume , based off of things they read, that GMO's are bad or they don't know anything GMO's or farming but they sure do jump on every hater bandwagon there is. Its annoying! You know what's funny though? Each year apple comes out with a new iPhone with more technology, and everyone has positive feedback, no complaints and price always goes up. BUT When a farm, or agriculture gets something new with more technology and prices decrease for the consumers of their product they produce. Negative feedback. Yes everything has cons or theory on why something may be bad, we read them everyday. Just like habits are bad but guess what.. I still bite my nails and you may too. If we got stressed out about everything we read, and all the false facts we read or believe guys I hate to tell you but life wouldn't be easy. Google isn't always right, just like we aren't either. Why do people target farmers/their practices? I think it's because there is a lack of interest to what goes on with the farmers and the farm. Let me be the first to tell you what a shame that is.. because who do we need to sustain our food supply? Farmers! Let me tell you how I really feel about it.. Its really annoying when people share a post, and its a non GMO product, or something that claims to be GMO free but has no ingredients that could even be a GMO. MISLEADING IS THE WORD LABELS are the problem, as well as the uneducated. If it wasn't for the label you wouldn't even know the difference. So today.. lets get started by AGVOCATING.. POSITIVE GMO POST, LETS CHANGE ALL THIS NEGATIVITY AND TARGETING GMO'S. First of lets talk about what a GMO is.. A GMO is a genetically modified organism. This means that the genetic makeup is altered. Science so cool, that we can do this with our technology. And guess what, the reasoning behind altering the crop is positive. We will talk about benefits shortly... What are the GMO crops/food? Before listing them, yes this means they can and have been genetically modified and on the market, but guess what there are still NON GMO products of that crop. It just means that it can and has been modified. Fun Fact: GMO seeds have safely been tested more than any other crop in history. (notice the word safe) But lets get back to listing them.. here we go Soybeans Squash Corn(sweet and field) Cotton Papaya Canola Alfalfa Sugar Beets Potatoes Apples... Now let's talk benefits to the grower/farmer..
Now, this post isn't to lead you to like or not like GMO's, but it is to inform you, and let you make that decision yourself, or have your opinions. Now of course, I'll be here supporting GMO's, and thankful for technology, and all the benefits GMO's have given farmers. What's the question I always ask? Oh yeah, Who's going to be feeding the world in 2050 with our growing population? FARMERS xx A Growers Granddaughter Happy Friday! Happy Tuesday!
Out of these three meat choices given, which do you consume the most of during the week?
During the week,I consume a balance between beef and chicken. Today's awareness is looking at market prices( a little economics). Market prices are important for farmers and consumers. In order for the farmers operation to be successful he has to make money on whatever he is producing. Today, we are looking at the futures market for meat, specifically beef (cattle), and pork (hogs). Consumers also need to watch the market because they reflect prices in store. A little economics lesson as promised.. Prices fluctuate constantly depending on..
Let's talk a little about pork (hogs) and beef (cattle) futures market. For cattle in the futures market has two sections Feeder Cattle- weaned but not fully grown yet, around 600 + pounds Live Cattle- fully grown cattle normally 1,200 + pounds, For pork the futures market only has one section Lean Hogs-normally weigh 200-25+ pounds When selling in the livestock market, each price is qouted per pound Today Prices for Futures Market of April 2020 (I rounded) Feeder Cattle-$1.48/lb Live Cattle- $1.27/lb Lean Hogs-$0.76/lb Keep a watch on the market to see how much those numbers change close to April! I encourage you this shows you what farmers watch, when locking in their futures prices for grain or livestock. Lots of focus on the market. The market plays a huge role in their operation. Hope you guys have a great Tuesday and hopefully you learned something! Hey y'all, happy Monday!
In each day of your life you use a by product from agriculture. Here are some examples..
My GOAL over these next couple of weeks is to educate and promote all things agriculture of course but also make you AWARE of how much YOU use/consume agriculture products. Supporting all types of growers/farmers whether it be livestock/ranching, gardens, row crop farmers. Also supporting those who work in the industry gathering these products, working in the factories to produce or put to together all the products we consume in our life. AGRICULTURE AWARENESS IS VITAL. You see this past week the industry has had yet another fallback, because of a major influencer "The Golden Globes", this week decided to "Go Vegan" for "Environmental Awareness" For those of you who may not know what Vegan is, it means that one will not consume: MEAT, EGGS, or DAIRY PRODUCTS. Basically they will not use or eat anything that comes from an animal. Yes vegan is a choice, and my no means wrong. I couldn't do it if we are being honest and not just because I love all things agriculture but I cannot live without meat, eggs or diary products. And for all those reading this saying oh you could you just don't want to... your right I don't want to. Yes vegans, still eat plant based food, so yes they technically are using agriculture products still. But it still makes a huge negative impact on dairy, meat, and poultry sections of agriculture. Let's also just throw in the food pyramid we learned in 3rd grade as well which consist of meat, dairy, veggies, fruits, all of the above and more. Just like the Ellen post I posted if you don't want to eat meat or consume some products then that is okay and your choice BUT do not bash the industry. WHO IS GOING TO BE FEEDING THE WORLD IN 2050? When huge influencers make statements like this everyone starts to jump on the bandwagon. NOT ME. Here's to learning together and growing together, and spreading all things agriculture in our daily life. It's that time were things are slowing down around the farm for a bit. So the boys are moving hay that was baled in the summer all to one place back at Lively H.
Also starting to sale hay and deliver as well... Hay for Sale
